London: The Crime Club by Collins, 1961. First edition. Cloth. Near Fine/Very Good Indeed. 7.5" by 5". None. An exceptional signed association copy of this thrilling standalone novel, by the Queen of Detective Fiction, Agatha Christie. The first edition of the work. With a dedication from Christie to the front free endpaper reading: 'Carlo from Agatha' From the library of Charlotte 'Carlo' Fisher with her bookplate to front paste down. Hired as a governess for her daughter Rosalind, Fisher would later work as Christie's secretary, transcribing a number of her novels, notably The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, considered the turning point in her literary career. The pair soon became close friends, with Fisher acting as one of very few true confidantes for the often reclusive and shy Agatha.  The association of this work is not simply that of an employee of Christie, but of her closest and longest standing friend. An exceptional copy of this work with a personal association from the… Read More

Description:
London: The Crime Club by Collins, 1961. [Crime fiction] FINELY BOUND FIRST EDITION. Octavo (19 x 13cm), pp.256. Finely bound by the Baker Bindery, Anniston, Alabama in green full morocco, with gilt titles and decoration to spine, green patterned paste-paper endpapers, generous turn-ins ruled in gilt, with gilt motifs of dagger, pistol, moustache and knitting needles tooled as the four corner-pieces, all edges gilt. Original cloth spine and upper bound in at rear. Internally clean and bright. A fine copy in a handsome leather binding. A masterful 'strange tale' in which 'The Pale Horse' is the name of both the village pub and a secret organisation which kills by black magic. The successful crime writer Ariadne Oliver (an exaggerated version of Christie herself) is called in to unravel the mysterious happenings... This is the final case (and perhaps the best) for Mrs. Oliver, who first appears with Parker Pyne in two short stories, and in seven full-length novels (six of them with the great detective… Read More

London: The Crime Club, by Collins, 1961 . First edition. Cloth. Very Good Indeed/Very Good. 8" by 5.5". None . A very smart first edition of Agathe Christie's thrilling murder mystery, with a somewhat supernatural theme. The first edition, first impression of this work, in the publisher's original price clipped dust wrapper.Christie's thrilling mystery follows the narrator Mark Easterbrook as he investigates a list of names and the death of a Catholic Priest. With a small appearance from Christie's novelist detective Ariadne Oliver. This novel is notable among Christie's books as it is credited with having saved at least two lives, after readers recognised the symptoms of thallium poisoning from the description in the book. Dust wrapper rear wrap age toned, with significant spotting. Amateur restorations to dust wrapper back… Read More

Description:
London: Collins Crime Club, 1961. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Fine/Near Fine. 8vo., 256pp. Beautiful First Edition, bound in red cloth with titles in black on spine. Square, tight and clean throughout with gentle bumping to spine ends and tips. No interior toning or spotting though there is a faint sticker ghost on the front paste-down. Very attractive unfaded and unclipped, though unpriced, dust-jacket, has a tiny closed edge-tear on the rear panel and a few rubs to edges. Still fresh and bright with no chipping or creases. The jacket is unpriced as it was one that would have been shipped to other countries in the British Empire that would have affixed a price sticker in its own currency. (This is likely the cause of the sticker ghost mentioned above. It is NOT a Book Club Edition. British BCE's are produced in a completely different manner than American BCE's but that is another topic. A quite sharp collectable copy at a great price.
